Sermon Notes

Genesis 32 – Wrestling with God. Many people have been fighting with God their whole life, and Jacob is no exception. This sermon reveals the value of brokenness and the importance of surrendering our life to a loving God. Jacob has always schemed, planned and used his own strength to benefit himself. Nevertheless, he finds himself alone with God and in a wrestling match that will change his life forever! When we surrender our life to Jesus, He transforms our character and identity. Pastor Dave’s sermon from Genesis 32 – Wrestling with God, will encourage your heart that in your darkest times of trouble God draws near to you.

GOD DRAWS NEAR TO US in times of trouble.
“Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven. For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.”
Matthew 18:10–11 NKJV     https://www.blueletterbible.org/nkjv/mat/18/10-11/s_947010

“‘Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.’ But to the wicked God says: ‘What right have you to declare My statutes (mercy, kindness, grace), or take My covenant (promises) in your mouth, seeing you hate instruction and cast My words behind you? When you saw a thief, you consented with him, and have been a partaker with adulterers. You give your mouth to evil, and your tongue frames deceit. You sit and speak against your brother; You slander your own mother’s son. These things you have done, and I kept silent; you thought that I was altogether like you; but I will rebuke you and set them in order before your eyes. Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver: Whoever offers praise glorifies Me; and to him who orders his conduct aright I will show the salvation of God.’”

HUMAN STRENGTH IS FINITE AND RELATIVELY IMPOTENT

Jacob finally PRAYS TO GOD

Jacob had been WRESTLING GOD his entire life

What’s in a name? JACOB –> ISRAEL

Jacob: “Deceiver” –> Israel: “Governed by God”

Brokenness would not be a prized virtue if there were not a loving God who powerfully leads all who surrender their life to Him
